Single Manager Hedge Funds

Peregrine Capital

Peregrine Capital is a niche asset management company, specialising in the management of a range of hedge funds.

Peregrine Capital focuses primarily on South African listed equity counters, using bottom-up stock selection and disciplined research procedures. Since inception in July 1998 it has produced industry-leading results across its suite of funds and today is South Africa's largest hedge fund manager with over R3 billion under management.

Green Oak Capital

Green Oak Capital is a dedicated South African fixed income hedge fund management company. The founders of Green Oak are Willie Viljoen and Rean Smit who set up the fund management company within Rand Merchant Bank in 2007. Currently two strategies are managed: the Green Oak Fixed Income and the more aggressive Go Green strategy.

The Big Rock Capital Fund

The fund invests in South African listed equities and has a long/short investment strategy with both a neutral physical and beta bias with the objective of preserving capital and delivering consistent positive returns irrespective of market conditions.

The Arcis Fund

The Arcis Fund is a multi-strategy fund which employs a rigorous process of statistical and technical analysis to implement structured derivative strategies across all major asset classes to achieve positive returns across all market conditions and optimise the risk profile of the portfolio.

Caveo Fund Solutions

Caveo is a dedicated fund-of-hedge-funds company, formed as a joint-venture between Peregrine and Investment Solutions, South Africa’s largest multimanager. Both shareholders have invested in hedge funds for over ten years and have built up considerable experience, risk management infrastructure and proprietary hedge-fund portfolio construction technologies. Caveo currently has assets under management of approximately R2.8 billion.

Orthogonal

Orthogonal Investments was conceived during 2006 and opened in February 2007. Four experienced asset managers with a shared investment philosophy and strong investment credentials joined together believing that a small, specialised asset manager can achieve far more for its clients than a large, over-structured manager. Broking & Structuring

The Peregrine Group’s derivative, equity and prime services as well as its structuring activities are housed within Peregrine Securities.

Peregrine Securities is a member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange with access to the following product markets:

commodity derivatives and
currency derivatives
   

Its broking execution capabilities extend to Africa and the international markets but with respect to the JSE, the focus is on high volume and robust connectivity. Peregrine Securities client base includes local and foreign hedge funds, investment banks, institutional fund managers and life assurers, as well as ultra high net worth individuals

Another subsidiary, Peregrine Derivatives is rated as one of the country’s leading derivative brokerages both in terms of research ratings and volumes transacted. Group Investments

The group invests a substantial portion of its balance sheet into hedge funds and, to a lesser extent, private equity opportunities. All group costs are offset against group investment income.

The group currently has in excess of R600 million invested in hedge fund and private equity activities. Group investments contributed 11% of the group’s profit from ordinary activities in the year to 31 March 2010.

Capital Introduction

Peregrine’s Business Development & Capital Introduction division provides a central portal for investors into the funds of the Peregrine Group and its associate companies. A focused and dedicated team operates across the Peregrine platform to introduce capital from the appropriate sources into the applicable funds and products.
